Peer Run Respite is coming to Wisconsin thanks to a $1.2 million allocation from the 2013-2015 biennial budget and legislation enacted in part due to the Speaker’s Task Force on Mental Health. Many NAMI affiliates and other statewide peer organizations were involved in advocating for peer services that offer person-driven and hope-based support.
NAMI Fox Valley was one of three agencies in the state to receive funding to develop peer run respite. GEP (Grassroots Empowerment Project) will be opening Grassroots Wellness Peer Run Respite in Menomonie and SOAR Case Management will be opening Solstice House in Madison. NAMI Fox Valley’s peer run respite, Iris Place, will be located in Appleton.
Peer Run Respite offers a safe, home-like environment for adults in emotional distress or crisis due to mental health and/or substance abuse who want and need peer support. A short-term stay (up to five days) offers guests an opportunity to explore crisis as an opportunity for growth and change with 24/7/365 peer support. The peer run respites are free to all adults who live in Wisconsin and can be an alternative to inpatient hospitalization and ER visits. Stays are voluntary and guests may come and go as they choose. Each home has at least three bedrooms and as many as five. The staff support individuals in working toward their wellness visions and utilize their lived experience to provide hope and a strengths orientation. Staff will also provide linkages to resources within the home and community.
All of the peer run respites are offering open houses and plan to be open by the end of March. For many in our state, this is a dream come true to offer a healing space that offers a different option for individuals to find support.
